Counselling is a talking therapy. A time for a person to be able to share their thoughts and feelings to a qualified therapist who is not only sensitive to the information shared but that treats it with confidentiality and respect.
The therapist will sometimes provide information, but they are not there to tell you what to do, give advice or prescribe medication.
A therapist is there to help you to see things from different perspectives, be that feelings or situations, in an effort to help you to move forward in a way that you’re happy with and is true to you.
Therapy can be useful if you are feeling painful emotions or facing difficult decisions. It can help you to gain self awareness and understanding when considering the relationships you have with yourself and with others.
Therapy can be helpful after unsettling events such as breakdowns in relationships, redundancy, bereavement and illness. Counselling can also help to look at life’s stages as well as helping to address feelings of anxiety and stress when things don’t go to plan or when that future vision is changed.
An important point to note though is you don’t have to be at crisis point to access counselling. Your thoughts and feelings are valid and if you feel talking about something to an independent person would help to untangle things, make things feel clearer and you less stuck then reach out.
Counselling isn’t always easy, it can be uncomfortable to unpick feelings and sometimes the self awareness we gain takes time to adjust to. This is why it is so important that your counsellor is someone that you can connect with, and be honest with.
I work with a range of difficulties that include the following. Ultimately however I work with you, as you are with whatever you bring. Please don’t be put off by this list if the area you are bringing isn’t listed here. It will be something that we can explore together. If I’m not the right person to help then I may be able to signpost you to someone that is.
